Tenderspirits-Web-Mall.com:  What is Mesotheilioma?

This article is about mesothelioma and it’s cause.  Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lungs, lining of the abdomen, or heart caused by exposure to asbestos. It is a cancerous disease that is becoming more and more common. Mesothelioma is a cancer that is unique to those who have been exposed to asbestos. It is a rare cancer, with only 2300 cases diagnosed in 2000, in the United States. Sadly, mesothelioma is an environmentally caused diseased.  With the number of indoor paintball facilities growing at an exponential rate, the concern about mesothelioma is not unfounded. Malignant mesothelioma is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the lining of the chest or abdomen. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer, but the deadliest one of all.

About ten percent of cases are found in the abdominal cavity lining, and even more rarely, mesothelioma is found in the lining of the heart. The most common form of mesothelioma is pleural mesothelioma found in  the lungs. Mesothelioma is a disease where the cells of the mesothelium become abnormal. Malignant mesothelioma is a very aggressive tumor which is found resistant to most of the treatment, which is increasing in frequency throughout the world. The latency period for mesothelioma is often 15-30 years. An additional symptom of pericardial mesothelioma is palpitations Pleural mesothelioma is believed to be caused by inhalation of asbestos or asbestos containing materials. Chrysotile mesothelioma is a form of peritoneal mesothelioma. Peritoneal mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the abdominal cavity or a tumor of the membrane Peritoneum.  Malignanat mesothelioma is a form of cancer which affects the mesothelium. The non-cancerous type of mesothelioma is known as benign multicystic mesothelioma. Other rare forms of mesothelioma include mesothelioma of the ovaries and the scrotum. A more rare case of asbestos lung cancer is the peritoneal mesothelioma where the affected areas are the stomach and the abdomen. The third and most rare type of Mesothelioma is Pericardial Mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is not caused by smoking, as lung cancer so often is. White Americans are diagnosed with Mesothelioma more often than African Americans are diagnosed with Mesotheiloma.. Mesothelioma is the most serious of all asbestos related diseases.

Once malignant mesothelioma is found, more tests will be done to find out if cancer cells have spread to other parts of the body. A diagnosis of mesothelioma is most often obtained with careful assessment of clinical and radiological findings in addition to a confirming tissue biopsy. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that develops in the mesothelial cells. Nearly 85% of all cytology tests are negative or inconclusive when, in fact, mesothelioma is present. A special x-ray technique, called a mesothelioma is usually accomplished with a lateral decubitus film, this procedure may not be conducted. Using IL2 as a treatment for pleural mesothelioma is still in the experimental stages. Therefore, given the extent of these operations and their very limited success, the exact role of surgery in treating mesothelioma is often debated. Understanding mesothelioma is the first step everyone needs to take.

Initially, the risks associated with asbestos exposure were not known. Test were preformed with the  Objective being to estimate exposure-response relationships for mesothelioma and low levels of environmental exposure to crocidolite. A history of asbestos exposure at work is reported in about 70 to 80 percent of all cases. In rare cases the latency period has been as short as 10 to 15 years after the first exposure to asbestos. Exposure to asbestos has affected residents of the Clydeside area.

Can brief asbestos exposure cause mesothelioma?  Exposure of as little as one or two months can result in Mesothelioma 30 or 40 years later. Approximately 7-13 per one million male patients with a history of asbestos exposure contract mesothelioma. Mesothoma caused by exposure to asbestos and asbestos related substances has claimed more than 2000 lives per year. Several diseases are associated with exposure to asbestos. Significant exposure to asbestos increases the risk of lung cancer, mesothelioma and non-malignant lung and pleural disorders.

When the latency period for asbestos disease is factored in, cases of mesothelioma will continue to be diagnosed for years to come. Workers involved in asbestos mining, milling and manufacturing its products are at the greatest risk for developing mesothelioma. Over half a million asbestos and mesothelioma injury claims have been filed to date. .

Mesothelioma is a cancerous disease that is becoming more and more common. Mesothelioma is not contagious and cannot be passed from one person to another. Once malignant mesothelioma is found, more tests will be done to find out if cancer cells have spread to other parts of the body. Nearly 85% of all cytology tests are negative or inconclusive when, in fact, mesothelioma is present. Tragically the word mesothelioma is becoming more and more well known as  mesothelioma is an environmentally caused diseased.

About the Author: Elsie Roach
My interest in Mesothelioma was influenced by the death of my father's
best friend Art.  Art died of supposedly lung cancer. My father worked
for Hunter's Point Navel Ship in South San Francisco for years.  Luckily
my father retired in 1962 as all most all of his friends he worked with at
Hunter's Point died of mesothlioma.  The workers were sheet metal
workers and they worked in asbestos all day. By the time my father
reached the age of 60 years old 9 of his friends died from lung cancer.
